CIBA Vision has announced a recall of a number of its SoftPerm daily contact lenses, as there are fears that the lenses may not be sterile, which might result in eye infections.
It is believed that the problem concerns all lots produced after 13 March 2009. The lenses are to be returned to their manufacturer.
According to a release from the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), the issue was found when CIBA Vision changed the vial stopper on the packaging of the lens. In addition, the MHRA stated that the pH of the solution in which the lenses are stored may be out of specification, resulting in a risk of burning and stinging when the lenses are inserted in the eye.
Optometrists are strongly advised to contact their clients who purchased the affected lenses and provide them with information on the situation.
A CIBA Vision spokesperson said some problems with SoftPerm lenses occurred in June 2010, but all the affected customers were contacted and the lenses were subsequently discontinued.
