The advantages and disadvantages of soft and rigid contact lenses are widely known. Rigid contact lenses are not very comfortable if they are worn for extended periods of time. On the other hand, they are extremely durable. Conversely, soft contact lenses, typically larger, offer far superior comfort (daily disposable contact lenses do not even require any care), but have to be replaced on a regular basis in order to avoid very serious complications.
Hybrid contact lenses, which combine the best features of both types, might prove to be an answer to numerous problems. These contact lenses consist of a hard centre made of gas permeable plastic; this ensures that the lens can be used for a long time, maintains the lens’s shape and provides maximum clarity and visual acuity. The outer part of the lens is soft, which results in improved comfort due to the fact that the lens adjusts its shape to the eye and does not irritate it.
As far as contact lens care is concerned, soft lens cleaners and solutions are recommended, as they act on the outer, soft layer of the lenses.
