In spite of numerous programmes that promote taking care of contact lenses properly, the latest study concerning ulcerative keratitis suggests that the problem is growing.
Researchers, who examined over a million people living in California, found that contact lens users are 9 times more likely to develop ulcerative keratitis than the rest of the population. Dr David Gritz of Montefiore Medical Center in New York pointed out that people hearing about advances in contact lenses (especially the ones connected with longer use periods) fail to realise how dangerous it is to disregard the recommendations of ophthalmologists and contact lens manufacturers.
Another thing discovered by the study is that young women appear to be much more prone to the infection than young men. This can probably be explained by the popularity of crazy contact lenses (the recent trend triggered by Lady Gaga’s video is a case in point).
People need to use the services of specialists when they decide to start wearing contact lenses and have regular follow-up examinations, Dr Gritz concludes.
