Silicone hydrogel soft contact lenses were introduced over ten years ago and have been carefully studied ever since. In consequence, they have been proven to be a safe and healthy alternative to hydrogel contact lenses. In the latest edition of Contact Lens Spectrum, several specialists in the field published an article presenting the benefits of switching to silicone hydrogel lenses.
First of all, silicone hydrogel lenses offer higher gas permeability, which means that the eye receives more oxygen. As numerous studies confirm, it is of great significance, since it leads to a decrease in the signs and symptoms of corneal hypoxia (e.g. redness, dryness, photophobia, blurred vision). As a result, they are a viable option for patients with red eye and other typical problems associated with contact lens wear. They are also characterised by low protein deposition, a quality very important for continuous wear lenses.
According to the experts, even though silicone hydrogel contact lenses are usually more expensive than hydrogel ones, they are still worth trying, considering the comfort and health benefits they offer.
