According to a recent study, 42% of contact lens wearers complain about dry eyes. 84% of them report that it exacerbates at the end of the day, which is consistent with the fact that most dry eye cases are evaporative in nature.
As far as treatment is concerned, most practitioners recommend replacing their patients’ contact lenses with ones that are made of a different material. Other suggestions include using eye drops and changing lens care solutions.
The study reveals that switching to silicone hydrogel contact lenses is perceived as the most beneficial. The other effective option was changing monthly or weekly lenses in favour of daily disposable ones.
In spite of these ways of dealing with the problem, it is estimated that approximately 17% of contact lens wearers discontinue using them. However, contact lenses and solutions manufacturers are planning to introduce numerous products, both prescription and over-the-counter, that are to help to manage the condition. Moreover, new lens materials are designed taking the problem into consideration and it may soon disappear altogether.
