It seems that Lady Gaga has started another fashion. In her ‘Bad Romance’ video, she presented a look whose most important part was her unnaturally big eyes. And though these eyes were most probably computer-generated, the look has been copied by thousands of teenage girls with the use of so-called ‘circle lenses’.
Circle lenses are coloured contact lenses that make eyes appear bigger, because they cover not only the irises – as normal coloured contact lenses do – but also part of the whites.
The problem is that, in the US, these lenses are not provided by any major contact lens manufacturer; they are distributed via specialist websites, which do not verify their customers’ prescriptions, a mandatory procedure for all contact lens purchases.
The FDA spokesperson, Karen Riley, has expressed her concern over the issue. She said that all users of circle lenses are at risk of serious eye injuries, as are all those who buy contact lenses without a valid prescription or help from an eye practitioner. The American Optometric Association issued a similar statement.
