Optometry & Vision Science has just published a report showing that patients who replace their silicone hydrogel contact lenses in accordance with manufacturer recommended replacement frequency generally enjoy better comfort and vision at the end of the day.
The report was based on research conducted at the Centre for Contact Lens Research (CCLR) at the University of Waterloo School of Optometry in Canada. Among the 1,334 participants of the study, 70% of those who wear monthly contact lenses replaced them on time while the proportion was only 41% in the group of the users of two-week contact lenses.
According to Desmond Fonn, Professor of the University of Waterloo School of Optometry and chief investigator of the study, it was the first study which demonstrated that proper replacement is associated with better vision and comfort. Replacement schedules are established by manufacturers to maximise the performance of contact lenses, taking into consideration the accumulation of proteins, lipids and microorganisms on the surface of a lens as well as the wear of the lens itself.
The study was sponsored by CIBA VISION, the manufacturer of DAILIES® and AIR OPTIX contact lenses.
