Orthokeratology (or Ortho-K) was developed by the Dutch company Procornea, and is quickly gaining popularity, especially in the US, the Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland. It consists in the use of hard contact lenses, which are worn during the night and re-shape a person’s corneas so that he or she can enjoy 20/20 vision without wearing any glasses or contact lenses during the day. Recently, this method of vision correction was tested by a writer for The Independent.
Jimmy Lee Shreeve, whose contact lens prescription is -2.0D in both eyes, decided to check whether Ortho-K is as effective as it is claimed to be. After the standard eye examinations, his ophthalmologist prepared a detailed map of his corneas and sent it to a specialist shop, where a pair of contact lenses matching the shape of his corneas was produced.
The lenses were ready after several days. Shreeve applied them in accordance with the doctor’s suggestions and – to his surprise – his vision was perfect. He called it ‘a minor miracle’ and recommends it to everybody, especially to those who do contact sports and lead very active lives.
