While high-index materials have long been used for eyeglasses, they were not available to the producers of contact lens until recently. Paragon HDS HI 1.54 lens material is the newest one and has already changed the situation on the market. As its manufacturer claims, it has the highest refraction index of all materials currently used.
The consequence of applying high-index materials in the production of contact lenses is that they may be much thinner, something very important to those who suffer from strong myopia and normally need very thick lenses. This, apart from the obvious increased comfort – in the case of rigid materials the difference is considerable – leads to more oxygen reaching the cornea and all the health benefits that are associated with it.
In addition, when used for multifocal contact lenses, HDS HI 1.54 allows for greater magnification for reading than contact lenses made of conventional gas permeable materials.
The material is now approved for daily wear lenses with powers ranging from -20D to +20D as well as multifocal add powers of up to +4D.
