Freddy Krueger first became famous when Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street was released in 1984. The child murderer, played by Robert Englund, has been an iconic figure for over twenty-five years; he was featured in eight films before this year’s remake of the original movie. The franchise initial popularity, however, dwindled over the years and the producers decided to reinvent the series and its main antagonist along with it.
The newest film, a remake of the original A Nightmare on Elm Street, stars Jackie Earle Haley as Freddy Krueger. The actor, who had to spend long hours each day on the set allowing make-up artists to transform his face into the monster he played, admits that the contact lenses that he wore as part of his costume really affected how he acted. The coloured contact lenses, in addition to giving Haley a new look, made him half-blind, which – according to the actor – both encumbered and empowered him, making it much easier to immerse in the role.
