Coloured contact lenses have been on the market for quite a while. Of course, advertising agencies were first to use the technology for other than cosmetic purposes, putting complex designs on them (mostly the logos of the companies they represented). Yet, as the technology developed and became more available to the average lens wearer, a new trend came into existence: fashion contact lenses. Music and art festivals as well as Halloween celebrations are full of people wearing intricately decorated contact lenses that turn them into fantastic creatures such as vampires or, say, wolverines.
The trend was boosted by several enormously popular movies, such as Avatar and the Twilight saga, featuring characters with unusually tinted eyes. Some of these were simply computer-generated special effects, but some – like Robert Pattinson’s in Twilight – were the effect of wearing coloured contact lenses.
The upcoming FIFA World Cup is another factor that affects the trend. A number of football fans, instead painting their faces, are planning to wear country flag contact lenses. The sales are soaring and there are more and more designs available, as the manufacturers are striving to satisfy the growing demand.
